Description

Bochym Lodge and its entrance gateway piers were built in 1851, as indicated by a datestone. The lodge serves as the entrance to a manor house and is constructed from serpentine ashlar with granite dressings for architectural details. It features a cruciform dry Delabole slate roof with coped gable ends and a central serpentine ashlar chimney. The building has a cruciform plan with small porches at the two front angles, mirrored by small square-plan projections at the rear angles. The principal room is located in the wing that faces the drive, and each gable end has a canted bay window. The lodge is a single storey, with each wing featuring a gable end that has stone coping, a ball finial, and a stone canted bay window with stone mullions and transoms. Above the bay window, there is a small gable with stone coping, a ball finial, moulded corbelled kneelers, and an oval oculus with a hood-mould. All windows retain their original patterned leaded glass panes.

On either side of the front wing are small stone porches with coped gables at the front and side, each topped with ball finials. The left-hand porch has a moulded pointed arch doorway with a hood-mould and a narrow square-headed opening to the side, also with a hood-mould. Above the doorway is a stone coat of arms, and the porch features an original ledged door. A tall chimney stack, also cruciform in plan and with a chamfered cornice, rises from the intersection of the roof. The interior remains very complete and unaltered, showcasing a fine hammer beam roof in the principal room, which is said to have been used for estate business meetings.

The gate-piers are made of rockfaced ashlar, square in plan, and topped with dressed granite pyramidal caps and ball finials. Bochym Lodge is a remarkably complete Victorian structure with notable details, particularly in its glazing and roof structure.
