The Church Room Including Flight of Steps Adjoining West

The Church Room, possibly originally a church house and later used as a school, dates from the late 16th or early 17th century, with alterations in 1733, as indicated by a datestone. It is constructed of dressed granite with a steeply pitched slate roof, granite copings to the gable ends, finials and kneelers. A granite ashlar stack is located at the right-hand end, featuring a dripcourse. The building has a two-storey, single-room plan. The ground-floor room may have been unheated, with direct access via a central doorway. The first-floor room is heated from a stack in the right-hand gable and accessed via a doorway with external stairs on the left-hand gable.

The south front, facing the churchyard, is asymmetrical with two windows. The first floor features two large 19th-century, four-pane sashes with granite sills. The ground floor has a chamfered round-headed doorway with pyramid stops, a 20th-century plank door, and a smaller window with a dressed granite lintel and a 20th-century, top-hung, four-pane window. The west gable has a wide flight of granite steps leading to a first-floor doorway with a projecting lintel bearing the date 1733 and the initials T.T. and H.B. or H.R. positioned above the date. A late 18th-century panelled door is set within what appears to be an 18th-century frame. The east gable has a narrow late 19th- or early 20th-century, four-pane sash with a projecting lintel similar to that over the west gable doorway. The rear wall lacks openings.

The ground floor is a large, single room. The floor beams have been replaced. The first floor and roof remain uninspected. In 1785, the vestry book recorded permission for Oliver Glanvill to run a school in the vestry room. Charles Henderson’s history suggests that the initials T.T. likely represent Thomas Trewren.
