Description

The engine house, located approximately 50 meters northwest of Wheal Bush Farmhouse, is a ruin dating from the mid to late 19th century. It is primarily constructed of killas rubble, featuring granite quoins, jambstone, and bonding stones, with dressed coursed granite facing on the southwest wall. The structure includes a round, two-stage chimney at the north corner, with round brick arches over the openings and a brick upper stage to the chimney. Originally, the building had a gable-ended roof and three floors, but it is now roofless and floorless. The plan is rectangular and single-cell, with a thicker bob wall facing the mine shaft to the southeast and the round chimney at the north corner. The walls are mostly intact, except for a framed and weather-boarded section on the second floor and the gable end over the bob wall. There is some undermining of the jambs at the ground floor opening of the bob wall due to the removal of machinery in the 20th century. Wheal Bush was part of Unity Wood and Killifreth Mine, which was reopened in 1865. This engine house is one of two in a group, likely used for pumping.
