Description
The Cellars is a grade II listed building located in Church Cove, Landewednack, dating from the early 19th century. Originally used as fish (pilchard) cellars and an adjoining winch house, it has been converted into a dwelling. The structure is built of random rubble, primarily granite and serpentine, and features slate hipped roofs, with the winch house having an apsidal roof covered in shingles.
The building consists of a two-storey main range to the north, with a courtyard in front, flanked by narrow single-storey wings that have open fronts to the yard, supported by square granite posts. A wall encloses the yard on the south side, featuring a central entrance with double doors and a granite lintel. The external east side wall is corbelled out above the plinth, and there is a brick chimney stack in the rear wall of the north range.
The winch house, which is attached to the east, has an apsidal end with a wide winch opening and an additional opening above, both fitted with 20th-century windows. The courtyard has a sloping cobbled floor that drains from west to east, with a channel designed to collect oil and salt from the pressed pilchards. At the base of the east wall, there is a conduit for carrying fish oil to storage tanks. The east wing has been modified with an inserted floor, while the front of the main north range was originally used as offices. Inside the winch house, the central capstan made of green heart wood remains intact.
