Description
A former barn dating to the 17th century, significantly remodelled in the early to mid-19th century, with a horse-engine house added in the later 19th century. The building is constructed of granite rubble with some cob, and has a grouted ragstone 1-plan roof plus a polygonal roof over the horse-engine house. Originally, the 17th-century walls formed a U-shaped plan, part of which was converted and extended into an L-shaped barn, incorporating a grist mill in the small part of the "L". This mill was powered by a waterwheel situated downhill, of which the wheel pit remains, and was connected by flat rods. A section of the original 17th-century structure survives as a lean-to, and a further bay was added in the 19th century, incorporating a threshing floor with stone steps at the rear. The horse-engine house was built into the central part of the 17th-century wall, aligned with the barn's front. Later, the horse-engine house was subdivided by a cross wall, creating a through passage between its original doorways. This required the conversion of a window to a doorway before another, wider doorway was cut next to the original front doorway. Externally, some original features remain, including two chamfered granite doorways and small chamfered and unchamfered granite windows with monolithic jambs. The front of the barn shows 19th-century remodelling with window openings, a threshing floor doorway, and blocked pigeon holes under the eaves. The horse-engine house has two unaltered window openings with copies of vertical glazing bars and random panes. A door between the windows dates to the mid to late 19th century. Internally, the building features 19th-century floor joists and roof structure. The barn includes uncommon remains of a 17th-century farm building, a 19th-century barn incorporating an integral mill with an unusual water-powered system, and a well-preserved horse-engine house.
