Description
The Mauretania Public House is a public house built in 1870 by Henry Masters, with a rear extension added in 1938 by W.H. Watkins. It features a limestone ashlar façade and has four storeys with a nine-window front facing Park Street. The windows are plate-glass sashes set in architraves with enriched heads. The ground floor was remodeled in the mid-20th century and includes carved capitals on the end pilasters. The building has similar three-window returns on the sides and a plain "moderne" style rear extension.
Inside, the public house retains exceptionally fine interiors from the RMS Mauretania, which was launched in 1907 and scrapped after its final voyage in 1934. These interiors showcase the luxurious accommodation typical of early transatlantic liners. Notable features include the Billiard Room on the ground floor, which has magnificent panelling and plasterwork, along with the Mauretania logo. The first floor is said to have retained similarly high-quality interiors.
