Description
No. 1 Host Street is a house, formerly a public house and shop, now used as a printer's works. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of brick with limestone dressings, featuring rendered returns, brick lateral stacks on the left side, and a pantile roof. The building has a double-depth plan and is designed in a late Georgian style. It stands three storeys high and has a two-window range. The facade includes giant pilaster strips leading to a moulded coping, and an early 19th-century shop front with an ashlar plinth, a panelled stall riser, panelled jambs, and a mullion supporting a fascia. The shop front features three-pane windows and a left-hand doorway with a plain surround, a plate-glass overlight, and a door with six flush panels. The windows are fitted with six-over-six pane sashes, each topped with five stepped voussoirs. Inside, there is a right-hand stair flight with stick balusters and column newels, and a plain fire surround in the second-floor front room. The rear elevation has been removed and extended for the printer's works. The facade remains remarkably unaltered.
