Description
St Vincent's Works gateway and attached wall to the south-west was built in 1891 by T.R. Lysaght, possibly with assistance from R.M. Drake, for J. Lysaght. The structure is made of squared, coursed Pennant rubble with limestone dressings, limestone ashlar, and squared, coursed rock-faced red sandstone. It features a vehicle gateway with quadrant side walls and a left-hand pedestrian gateway attached to the right of the St Vincent's Works offices. The design is in the Ruritanian castellated Gothic Revival style.
The gateway has a large semicircular arch with a coved archivolt and hoodmould, set in a recessed panel below a corbel-table. The wall includes an embattled parapet and a raised central gable, with battered sides and two-leaf wrought-iron gates that have leaves and an "RL" monogram. The quadrant walls curve out on either side, featuring battered sandstone plinths, two bands of limestone ashlar, and slim turrets at the ends with rusticated limestone bands and crenellated tops. To the left, there is a matching semicircular-arched gateway between turrets, which has wrought-iron gates and a fanlight. The attached wall to the south-west is a subsidiary feature of the gateway.
