Description

No. 1 John Street is a building that was part of a printing works, now used as an office. It was constructed between 1900 and 1901 by Henry Williams for Edward Everard. The building is made of red Cattybrook brick with red terracotta dressings and features a roof that is not visible. It is designed in the Romanesque Revival style and has a double-depth plan.

The building stands two storeys high with an attic and has a symmetrical front with deep moulded impost bands, a first-floor sill band, and a crenellated parapet. The attic is set well back and features a stepped coping, along with a slim octagonal turret topped with a cupola supported by fat columns, a dome, a fluted frieze, and a finial on the right side.

The ground floor has a semicircular-arched arcade with a taller central doorway that has keyed, moulded archivolts and alternate raised voussoirs, leading to a 20th-century door. The first floor and attic have large semicircular-arched windows with mullion and transom casements, which include glazing bars above the transoms. The parapet is adorned with gabled end merlons, with the right-hand merlon positioned above a sunken downpipe that features a decorative hopper shaped like a fluted bowl held by a dragon.

Inside, much of the interior dates from the mid-20th century, while the attic contains a braced queen post roof with through purlins. This building is a late example of Bristol's arcuated industrial style and includes decorative terracotta details supplied by Barham Bros of Bridgwater. The entrance facade of Everard's printing works on Broad Street, Nos 37 and 38, also remains.
