Description
No. 2 Great George Street is a shop built in 1762 by Thomas Paty. It features a brick construction with limestone dressings, party wall stacks, and a slate hipped roof. The building has a double-depth plan and is designed in the Mid Georgian style, standing three storeys tall with a three-window range. The principal elevation faces Great George Street and includes one window in the curved corner, presenting a symmetrical façade with a projecting pedimented centre and a parapet. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front, while the first floor showcases a sill band and an ashlar pediment with a round sunken panel. The windows are framed with Gibbs surrounds featuring triple keys, with 6/6-pane sashes on the first floor and 3/3-pane sashes on the second floor. To the right, there is a mid-19th century two-storey block that has a central mid-18th century doorway with a Gibbs surround and a bracketed cornice. The interior has been altered, featuring a mid-19th century stair flight from the entrance and moulded cornices. This building is paired with No. 47, which is also listed.
