Description

Numbers 7 to 13 Portland Square comprise a terrace of seven houses built between 1789 and 1820 by Daniel Hague. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar, with brick stacks and a slate mansard roof, and are arranged on a double-depth plan. They are in a late Georgian style. Numbers 7, 10, and 13 are four storeys high, while the remaining houses are three storeys high, all with basements and attics. The terrace presents a formal symmetrical composition, with the end and central houses projecting slightly and featuring attics. A rusticated ground floor is topped by a plat band and a modillion cornice with a parapet. The central house has pilasters rising from the first-floor plat band and terminating in acanthus capitals. The central doorway is plain and square-headed, with a fanlight in a rectangular overlight. The other doorways are centrally placed and feature Ionic columns, modillion pediments, batswing fanlights, and six-panel doors. Ground-floor windows have rusticated voussoirs, while those above have plain voussoirs, housing six-over-six pane sash windows. The end gables feature semicircular-arched doorways with Gibbs surrounds, double doors, stair windows, and lunettes above the cornice. Openings on either side of the gables have five stepped voussoirs. The interiors have been largely restored behind the facades, with a loss of original period details. Spear railings define the basement areas. The railings are considered a subsidiary feature. The terrace is part of Bristol’s “most complete and beautiful square.”
