Description

Davy House, also known as Muller House, is an orphanage built in 1868 by John Foster and Son of Bristol for George Muller. The building is constructed from coursed Pennant stone rubble with Bath stone window frames and features slate hipped and gable-ended roofs with bracketed verges. It has stone axial stacks with cornices.

The structure is large, with a central entrance block flanked by wings and cross-wings at each end, along with workshop ranges at the back. It stands three storeys high, with the central section comprising three bays, and the projecting outer bays are gabled. The centre features a Tuscan tetrastyle stone portico supported by paired square columns, with the centre breaking forward and round columns. Each side has five-bay wings with end cross-wings and two-storey outer wings with eight bays. The windows are 12-pane sashes set in plain stone architraves. At the rear, there are single-storey workshop ranges that also have similar sash windows.

Inside, there is an open-well staircase with a cast-iron balustrade, a mahogany handrail, and cast-iron scrolls supporting stone treads, along with arched stair-well windows. Davy House was the fourth of five large barrack-type orphanage buildings constructed by George Muller, a Prussian-born pastor and philanthropist, and was built entirely from voluntary contributions.
