Description

The Swimming Baths at Muller Homes, now part of Bristol City College, were built around the late 19th century to early 20th century, likely designed by John Foster and Son of Bristol for George Muller. The building is constructed from coursed Pennant stone, featuring Bath stone window frames and plinth weathering, topped with a slate roof that has gabled ends and a ridge-light. There are prominent ashlar axial and tall boiler stacks, both adorned with cornices.

The structure has a long rectangular plan with entrances located at the southeast end and a boiler house in an outshut at the northwest end of the southwest side. The southeast gable end is two storeys high, with two sash windows on the ground floor and a doorway to the right. Above, there is a canted oriel window with sashes and side-lights. Flanking outshuts on the left and right feature flat-roof dormers, with the left dormer having double doors. The rear range is single-storeyed, with a ridge-light and half-dormers that break the eaves on the sides. The roof extends over the northwest outshut, where a tall boiler chimney rises from the gable end. The northwest gable end also showcases a large Venetian window with stone architraves, flanked by smaller windows.

Inside, there is an iron roof structure over the pool area, which has since been filled in and subdivided. It is noteworthy that Muller's orphanage was constructed between 1847 and 1870 by George Muller, a Prussian-born pastor and philanthropist, entirely funded by voluntary contributions.
