Description
Harley Villa is a house built in 1809, as indicated by a date mark. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a lateral stack, and has a roof that is not visible. The house is arranged over three storeys, an attic, a basement and a cellar, and follows a double-depth plan with a single-bay range. The front of the building is symmetrical, featuring a single-storey porch on the right-hand side. This porch has pilaster strips to a corniced top, a shallow pedimented parapet between end blocks with Greek Revival-style incised decoration, and a wrought-iron railing with stylised leaf details. The porch’s open, keyed semicircular arch has chamfered reveals, a cornice and balustrade pierced by oval openings, now containing two recessed 20th-century doors. A two-storey canted bay window has a cornice and sill blocks, with 6/6-pane sashes, flanking 2/2-pane sashes, and a 4/8-pane sash to the second floor. The rear elevation displays four storeys and a three-storey bow window with curved sashes to the upper floors. The interior includes a 20th-century staircase leading to a flat, and originally contained a central lateral staircase. A notable feature is a yellow marble fire surround with white marble relief panels on the rear ground floor, as well as a flagged cellar exposing the natural rock surface at the front. Attached to the front garden are wrought-iron railings and gates supported by Pennant stone piers with scrolled bracket caps.
