Description
Numbers 1 to 6 Canynge Square form a terrace of six houses built in 1842, likely designed by Charles Underwood. The houses are constructed of stucco with limestone dressings, featuring party wall stacks and a hidden roof. They are arranged with a double-depth plan and exemplify the late Georgian style. Each house is three storeys high with a basement, and has a single-window range. The terrace is a composed design, with the end and central pairs of houses projecting forward. The ground floor is banded and sits above a string course, topped by a dentil cornice and parapet. The right-hand doorways are prominent, with No.1 possessing a single-storey porch with pilasters and a cornice. The porch has rectangular overlights with margin panes and a door with two rectangular panels. The windows are tripartite, incorporating pilaster jambs on the ground and first floors, with 4/4-pane and flanking 2/2-pane sashes on the upper floors; single 6/6-pane sashes are present in the basement. Tented balconies are situated above the first-floor windows, supported by cast-iron brackets and featuring wrought-iron railings with quatrefoil detailing. The interior, though uninspected, is reported to contain a central lateral dogleg staircase, panelled shutters, and six-panel doors. Attached to the houses are wrought-iron railings to the front steps, along with front garden walls supported by piers with round-faced caps.
