Description

This is a timber-frame house, originally dating from the 17th century, located at 45 High Street, Bristol. It was later refenestrated in the 18th century and significantly altered in 1908 by JH Hirst. The front facade is of random ashlar stone with rendered sections, topped with a hipped pantile roof. The building's plan incorporates front and rear rooms, a central well, and a staircase on the right-hand side. The symmetrical 20th-century front features a ground floor with Art Nouveau-style incised timber pilasters and consoles framing a 20th-century shop front and a doorway. Above this is a heavy timber dentil cornice with small brackets, a gable with boxed eaves, and a central pendant. A three-storey canted bay window is fitted with oak Ipswich-style windows on the first and second floors, with sidelights. The third floor has a three-light casement window with plate glass, leaded above transoms, and rendered panels between the window bays.

The rear elevation, dating from the 17th century, is four-storeys high, with a two-window range and shallow cornices to each floor. A gable is set back behind the fourth floor. A small doorway sits on the left-hand side, with 18th-century six-over-six-pane sash windows in flush frames, which are paired and taller on the ground floor.

The interior front rooms are from the 20th century and include a right-hand staircase with moulded balusters. Above this is a 17th-century winder staircase. A central light well is located to the left and contains internal windows with glazing bars, now partly covered by a 20th-century roof. A first-floor back room features a 17th-century moulded doorway with a chamfer stop and a two-panel door. The property also includes a vaulted basement.
