Description

The walls and gazebo along the northwest side of Sanctuary Gardens in Sneyd Park, Bristol, date from around 1880. They are constructed from squared Lias rubble, red brick, and limestone dressings, featuring a Byzantine-style apsidal gazebo flanked by two walls. The gazebo has a segmental arch at the front and a back wall with a Lias plinth, alternating courses of red brick and coursed limestone, topped with an arcade of semicircular arches. The rear of the gazebo is supported by buttresses, with the left wall displaying two lunettes, while the right wall is blind but matches the gazebo's banding.

Inside the gazebo, there is a mosaic floor and a coved, wooden panelled ceiling. Four octagonal piers, likely remnants of a pergola, stand at the front, along with a series of low walls that define a circular courtyard featuring a central plain fountain.

This structure was likely designed by Henry Dare Bryan, who also designed Sneyd Park House, built in 1880 for the Mardon family. The gazebo and adjacent walls are notable for their fine architectural detailing and their significance to the gardens of the house, justifying their listed status. However, other sections of wall from Sneyd Park Gardens do not possess the same level of completeness or architectural detail to warrant listing.
