Description
Flan O'Brien's is a public house built around 1860. It features a narrow frontage with a splayed corner and a long return to Saw Close, topped with a low hipped roof and deep bracketed eaves. The building is three storeys high with a basement and has a total of ten bays, arranged as two bays, one bay, and seven bays. All the windows are plain sash, with the first-floor windows set beneath a cornice that projects from the wall, arranged in a rhythm of one:two:two:one bays. There is a clock set in a masonry surround at cornice level on the splay.
The ground floor has large plain arched windows that are set deep into an arcade, supported by splayed channelled piers with geometrical vermiculation on the capitals. The arches have a shallow hollow profile, with keys running out through a moulded string-course. There are doors located at the splay, the center of the long side, and at the left-hand end, along with a basement access panel on Westgate Street. The building has a moulded plinth that steps out to the central doors, deep eaves-bands that are interrupted by the tops of the window heads, and deep open eaves with a small fascia board and ogee gutter, supported by shaped wooden brackets. There are two eaves stacks with band and bracketed cappings, and one stack on the right side facing Westgate Street.
Inside, the pub's interior is of recent date. This prominent corner building showcases a blend of traditional Georgian and fashionable Italianate styles, reflecting the transitional period in Bath's architecture and typical of mid-Victorian commercial buildings.
