Description

This is a terrace of nine houses built around 1839, likely designed by G.P. Manners. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with slate roofs. They are arranged in a stepped formation.

The houses are three storeys high, with a basement, and originally each had two windows to the front, though this varies in the later houses. The windows are mostly sash windows. Those on the second floor are set within architraves, while the first-floor windows have architraves and cornice hoods supported by pilasters with consoles. Originally, the ground floor and basement windows had plain surrounds and twelve-pane glazing, with sixteen-pane windows to the basement level. Some windows have been altered, with replacements including plastic, steel casements, and sixteen-pane sashes. The front doors are set within deep, plain reveals and are four-panel doors with a transom light and margin lights. A sill band and moulded cornice run along the front, topped by a blocking course and parapet that sweeps up at the party divisions. Each house has a deep ashlar stack, with Nos 2 and 3 sharing a large, square stack.

The rear walls are also in ashlar and have plain eaves. Most rear windows are twelve-pane sashes in plain reveals. Houses 2 and 3 are one storey lower and less deep than the rest of the terrace.

Internally, No. 4 has a hall with a dark green scheme, including a painted dado, an iron window guard, and fireplaces with white marble surrounds. The staircase features Doric newel posts. The basement retains an original dresser, range, and fireplaces, with yellow walls, white ceilings, green joinery, and darker green panels. No. 9 has a ground floor front with a heavy fireplace and wide brackets. A stone staircase and elegant ceiling rose are also present.

The basement areas are enclosed by simple railings set on a stone curb, which return at the doorways. Minor additions have been made to Nos 5-9.
