Description

The dovecote, located to the southwest of St. Nicholas' Church, is a structure likely built in the late 16th or early 17th century for Sir John Harington's estate. It underwent restoration in 1982-83. The building is constructed of coursed rubble made from two different colors of lias limestone, with Bath stone quoins and dressings, topped by a Cotswold stone slate roof. It has a square plan and features steep, coped gables on each side, along with a moulded string course at the eaves level. The east and south gables include square, chamfered freestone openings, and there is a chamfered, squared-headed low doorway on the east side. The east gable also has putlog holes, and a timber louvred lantern was added in the 1980s. Inside, the dovecote contains finely sawn ashlar nesting boxes with overhanging string courses and is said to have the largest number of nesting boxes in Somerset.
