Description
The building comprises part of Thomas Baldwin’s development of shops with accommodation above, constructed between 1791 and 1794 on Bath Street, specifically the north-eastern section. This section was extensively rebuilt internally around 1960.
The original late-18th century facade of six-inch Bath stone ashlar has been retained, although the structure behind is steel and concrete faced with Bath stone. The building occupies six bays and an end quadrant at the north-eastern end of Bath Street.
Externally, the development is three storeys high with attics above. A ground-floor Ionic colonnade is a prominent feature. At this address, a modern shop front sits behind the colonnade of the quadrant, and the entrance to Arlington House is through a modern recessed door, set within terrazzo paving. The upper-floor windows are sash windows in plain reveals consistent with the late-18th century style. Several windows are embellished with pediments supported by scrolled consoles and carved swags. A platband below the second-floor windows incorporates Vitruvian scroll detailing. Above the parapet is a mansard roof with dormers. A single bay extends onto Stall Street, dating from the 1860s realignment alongside the Grand Pump Room Hotel.
The interiors date from the 1959-1961 rebuilding, with modern interiors in the ground-floor shops. Arlington House features communal staircases with solid balustrades and timber handrails. Some of the individual flats retain parquet flooring.
This listing includes flats 10, 11, 21, 22, 32 and 33 within Arlington House, along with the associated public areas within the original 18th-century building footprint. The ground-floor premises are excluded from the listing. The remaining portion of Arlington House to the north is also excluded.
