Description

This house, number 3 Hay Hill, appears to date from around 1800, with alterations made in the later 19th century. The front elevation is limestone ashlar, painted on the ground floor, with rubble side walls, and a roof that is not visible from the street. It has a narrow frontage and a double-depth plan, with the front entrance on the left. The house is four storeys high, with an additional fourth storey likely added around 1870, expanding what was previously an attic into a full storey. There is one window across the front. The basement has a grating to a basement window set within a painted plinth. The ground floor was converted from a shopfront in the late 19th century; it now contains a plain wall, a plain sash window with horns, a panelled door with a pilaster on the jamb, and a shop fascia above. The first floor has a plain sash window with a cornice hood supported by console brackets. The second floor contains a smaller plain sash window. A band at the third-floor sill level marks the line of a previous cornice. The windows are two-over-two sash windows, and the building has a cornice and parapet. The rear elevation is not visible. The interior has not been inspected.
