Description

North Hill Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the 15th century. It started as a single room with one and a half storeys and was extended to the left, likely in the early 16th century. A later 16th-century wing was added to the rear, and the roof was raised to two storeys and re-windowed in the mid-19th century, with few further alterations since then. The structure is built of limestone rubble with stone dressings and features a brick double Roman tiled roof, which has a brick gable stack on the left and a ridge stack to the right of the front door.

The farmhouse has an L-plan layout formed by the rear wing and consists of two storeys with three windows across the front. The ground floor includes a three-light 19th-century wooden casement window on both the right and left sides, as well as an off-centre pointed arched and chamfered doorway. There is a wall that projects slightly to the left of the door, likely indicating a former external wall. On the first floor, there are three six-pane sash windows, with the central pane being wider. To the left, there is a timber lintel that remains from a former attic window, and to the right of the door, a straight joint rises only to the first floor level, accompanied by a metal wall-tie. The stonework under the eaves differs from that at the raised roof level.

The right return of the farmhouse shows a line indicating the former roof level, with a blocked door that has a timber lintel remaining. There is a 19th-century two-light casement window on the first floor and another timber lintel above from a former window. The rear wing to the right has no windows and is two storeys high, with a small single-storey lean-to at the rear of the wing. The rear of the farmhouse features a brick single-storey lean-to that conceals the rear through-passage door. The inner side of the wing has two two-light casements on the ground floor and two sashes on the first floor, similar to those on the front.

Inside, only the rear wing was accessible for viewing, which features a very deep-chamfered beam and a room with a height of about two metres. There are hooks in the ceiling and a round-arched door leading to the front right room.
