Description

Two terrace houses, built around 1764 to 1770. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with low-pitched slate roofs. They are three storeys high with a basement, each having two windows to the front. The windows are twelve-pane sashes set in architraves with straight cornice hoods to the first floor; the first-floor windows have been extended downwards through the former sill band, and the windows in No.2 have fifteen panes. Ground-floor windows have splayed reveals with twelve panes, and basement windows also have twelve panes but are smaller. Each house has a six-panel door set in an architrave, topped with a pediment on pilasters with consoles, approached by two stone steps with a landing. A platband sits above the ground floor, and a modillion cornice with a blocking course and parapet runs along the top. A large central ridge stack is present. The rear elevation has two windows each; the window in No.1 is a plain sash, while the window in No.2 has renewed glazing bars. The basement level develops into a full lower ground floor, incorporating a doorway. Thin cavetto strings are present at each level. The interiors have not been inspected. A simple railing on a stone curb encloses the basement areas, returning at each end to the doorways. These two houses were designed as a unit with No.22 Charles Street, which is set at right angles and forms a stopped end to a group. The Reverend Horatio Nelson, father of the admiral, lived at and kept a school in No.1 at some point.
