Description

The Cross Keys Inn is an inn with origins dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, though it underwent significant modifications in the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed from squared and coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features a double Roman tile roof.

The original building is a gabled single depth range with two face gables and a central rear stair wing. Additional deep wings have been added to both sides at the rear, along with a substantial ashlar unit that has an entrance at the front. The inn stands three storeys tall with a cellar and has two windows, all of which are margin pane sashes. The front addition includes large sashes, and to the right, there is a pair of part-glazed doors with a transom light in a single-storey section.

The early building features coped front and end gables, with cross saddle-stones and an ashlar stack at each end. The left return is plain, while the right side has a low-set twelve-pane sash, followed by a deep wing with a swept-down roof leading to a plain outer gable with a stack. On the South Stoke Road wing, there is a modified sash above the cellar door and an additional door on steps to the right. The rubble stair wing has ashlar quoins and a blocked light with a flush surround visible at the top level, above later roofs. The interior has not been inspected, but a former listing mentions an original staircase and fireplace.
