Description
This listing describes a group of three boundary posts located on the east side of South Stoke Road in South Stoke.
The first post, dated 1827, was created for the Bath Turnpike Trust. It is made of cast iron and has a triangular shape with a half-pyramidal top. The post features raised lettering that reads: "1827 WIDCOMBE - BATH TURNPIKE TRUST" along the body and "SOUTH STOKE."
The second post is dated 1912 and is also made of cast iron with a triangular shape and half-pyramidal top. Its raised lettering states: "CITY OF BATH/SOMERSET C.C."
The third post is likely dated 1804 and is made of ashlar with a semi-circular head. It has incised lettering that reads: "P/L AND W/(1804)."
Historically, these boundary markers were erected during the time when James Loudon McAdam served as the engineer for the Bath Turnpike Trust. Nearby, across the road, there is a mid-20th century finger-post that lies outside the City boundary, contributing to a group that reflects the historical development of road signage.
