Description

Kelston Knoll is an Italianate country villa dated 1835. The ashlar-built house has a slate roof with overhanging eaves supported by brackets, and ashlar stacks. The west stack is inscribed with the date. The garden front has three bays, with a canted bay to the left and a projecting wing to the right. The right wing’s overhanging eaves form a broken pediment resting on pilaster strips. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, with tripartite windows on the two right bays of the ground floor. The ground floor window of the right wing has a bracketed cornice, and the first-floor window has a balustraded balcony on brackets. A balcony with a pierced parapet runs around the two left bays, supported by square columns forming an open loggia below. To the west, a low pierced wall extends for 5 yards and returns to a conservatory and billiard room behind. The entrance front comprises three bays with a projecting right wing under a broken pediment, featuring a panelled door with a fanlight above. A lower two-storey service wing is attached to the right, with three two-light casement windows within plain surrounds. The group value of the building lies in its contribution to the landscape setting.
