Description
20-24 Union Passage is a building that originally served as shops with accommodation above, dating from around 1806, with alterations made in the 20th century. The building was likely overseen by City Architect John Palmer, but it incorporates earlier designs from around 1791 by Thomas Baldwin. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features Welsh slate roofs, which are mostly concealed from view.
The building has three storeys and attics, with a total of ten windows across its façade. All the windows are six-over-six sashes set in plain reveals. The slight and uneven slope of the street results in varying window heights. The shopfronts are modern, with a plain 1930s style for Nos. 22-24. The exterior also includes a cornice, a parapet, and a mansard roof with several flat-topped dormers, though not all are visible from the street.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this building was part of a city improvement scheme following the Bath Improvement Act of 1789. Union Passage is a street with origins dating back to the Saxon period; it was previously known as Cox Lane and is depicted on Smith's Map of 1588.
