Description
Nos. 6, 6A, and 7 Union Passage are shops with accommodation above, built around 1806 and altered in the late 19th century. The building was likely overseen by City Architect John Palmer, based on earlier designs by Thomas Baldwin from around 1791. It features painted Bath limestone ashlar and Welsh slate roofs, which are mostly hidden from view.
The structure is three storeys high with attics and has three windows across its front. The ground floor showcases late 19th-century shopfronts that have good character. No. 7 includes a passageway that leads to The Corridor on the right, which has a circa 1900 shop window. No. 6 has a double-fronted shopfront with a six-panel door on the right and a plain door on the left that provides access to the upper floors, both framed by panelled Corinthian pilasters. The deep fascias are complemented by six-over-six sash windows above, all in plain reveals, except for the centre window on the second floor, which is in a blind recess. The building is topped with a cornice, parapet, and a mansard roof that has two flat-topped dormers for each house. No. 7 features a 19th-century gas lamp and bracket that project over the archway.
The building was part of the improvement scheme for the city centre following the Bath Improvement Act of 1789. Union Passage is a historic street that dates back to the Saxon period, previously known as Cox Lane, and is shown on Smith's Map of 1588. No. 6 was listed on 5th August 1975.
