Description

These are seven terrace mews buildings, dating to circa 1808, located to the rear of Sydney Place, and now used as houses. The buildings are constructed of limestone ashlar with slate and concrete tile roofs, which are hipped at the rear. They have double-depth plans.

The outer elevations are of less architectural interest, with visible forward-facing gable ends. Nos. 94 and 95 retain original eight-over-eight pane sash windows. Nos. 96 and 97 have been rebuilt more recently. Numerous modern insertions, including garage doors, windows, and replacement doors, have been made. The inner, garden, elevation consists of an arcade of blind arches containing casement windows (mostly modern) to the ground floor, set below smaller casement windows to the first floor. The cornices and parapets sweep down in steps to No. 99, mirroring the treatment of Sydney Place.

The interiors have been altered. An attached ashlar wall, approximately 2.5 metres high and 20 metres long, runs to the right of No. 93. It curves at the right-hand corner and connects to the garden wall of No. 93A. The row was extended to the west in 1995 to replace buildings destroyed by bombing in 1942. These mews buildings are closely associated with Sydney Place and, despite modern alterations, are notable for their unified and architectural garden elevation, providing a rare example of service buildings with architectural detailing.
