Description
Heron Lodge is a detached villa built around 1810, located on the south side of Bathwick Hill. The building features limestone ashlar facades with rubblestone returns and a hipped slate roof that has moulded stacks on the sides. It has a double depth plan, consisting of a small single-storey right wing and a lower two-storey left wing behind a projecting former coach house, which is now a garage.
The exterior is two storeys high with a lower ground floor and presents a symmetrical three-window front. It is adorned with coped parapets, cornices, and friezes. The windows are six-over-six pane sash windows with margin panes, and there is a Doric stone doorcase topped with a cornice. The garden elevation has four windows, featuring six-over-six sashes with half panes on either side, while the upper floor windows are also six-over-six but smaller. An arched doorway is located in the second bay from the left, featuring a part-glazed door with a fanlight above. The building is topped with a cornice, parapet, and hipped roof.
The interior has not been inspected. This house, possibly designed by John Pinch the Elder, is part of the early development of Bathwick Hill and was originally known as Bathwick Hill Villa.
