Description
Combe Hay Parish Church is an Anglican parish church of unknown dedication. The church features a 15th-century tower, while the main body was altered in the late 18th century and restored in 1874 with the addition of a south aisle and porch, possibly by George Smart, the Lord of the manor. The building consists of a west tower, nave, north porch, south aisle, and apsidal chancel. It is constructed of ashlar and coursed squared rubble, topped with slate roofs that have coped raised verges.
The west tower, dating from the 15th century, has three stages with diagonal buttresses, an embattled parapet with pinnacles, and features two-light bell chamber windows with cusped heads and pierced quatrefoil screens, along with a two-light west window and a projecting polygonal stair turret on the northeast side. The nave has Y-tracery windows, while the south aisle and chancel each have three two-light windows. The north porch is gabled and also features an embattled parapet.
Inside, there is an arcade of three bays, and all fittings date from the late 19th century. Notable monuments include a rococo-style inscribed marble plaque for Robert Smith, who died in 1755, created by Ford of Bath, with arms, urns, and a flat obelisk above it. Another monument is for John Bennett, who died in 1719, featuring an inscribed marble plaque flanked by Corinthian columns and a segmental pediment with arms.
