Description

Warleigh Manor School is a country house, now operating as a special school, built between 1814 and 1815. It was designed by John Webb of Staffordshire for Henry Skrine, and further altered and extended in 1907. The house is constructed of ashlar, with a hipped slate roof hidden behind an embattled parapet and a prominent cornice. It is an example of Picturesque Tudor Gothic architecture, demonstrating an asymmetrical design with an irregular plan and elevation. The building is two storeys high, with towers and turrets, including octagonal corner turrets and a three-storey tower featuring battlements and blank machicolations to the left. Windows are single and multi-light casements, some with square heads, others with cusped and plain four-centred arch heads, and some incorporating mullions and transoms, all with drip moulds. Tall stacks are arranged in diagonal groupings. An embattled, gabled porch with a four-centred arch opening is situated on the right side of the building. A large service wing lies behind the main house. The interior includes a main hall with traceried windows and good Gothic details, such as panelled doors, marble fireplaces, a plaster vaulted ceiling to the hall and staircase, moulded cornices, and a cantilever staircase with a cast iron Gothic balustrade. Warleigh Manor School represents an early example of 19th-century Tudor Gothic revival architecture.
