Description

No. 6 and the adjoining 1805 Rooms are two houses in a row, now used as offices. They date from the late 18th century and have undergone some 20th-century alterations. The buildings are constructed of limestone ashlar with coursed rubble on the returns and have slate roofs.

The exterior features three storeys and a basement, with each house having three windows, all of which are sash windows. No. 6 has a nine-pane window above a twelve-pane window at the sill band, flanked by large 20th-century multi-pane segmental-headed windows on either side of a central door, which has a three-pane transom light above it. This door is set within a slight segmental head and sunk surround, with pavement grilles on either side of the basement. The ground floor includes a deep platband in painted ashlar, a cornice with a blocking course, and a parapet.

The adjoining property, known as The 1805 Rooms and part of the Theatre Royal, has a 20th-century reconstructed front. It features replacement sixteen-pane sash windows at the upper levels and a large segmental-headed light at ground level, along with a 20th-century flight of steps leading to the doorway on the left. The front of this building is quite plain, with simple eaves. Each house has a deep ashlar chimney stack on the right side. The interior has not been inspected. These buildings are included for their group value.
