Description
The terrace comprises numbers 7 to 12 Hanover Street, a group of six houses built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, stepped down a gentle slope to the right of number 7. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with double-depth slate roofs and moulded stacks on the party walls. They have double-depth plans.
The terrace presents a two- or three-window front, incorporating parapets, cornices, and sill bands. Number 7 has a two-window front with three/three-pane sash windows to the second floor, and six/six- and eight/eight-pane sash windows to the first floor, respectively. It features a six-panel door within a shallow stone porch, with raised panels to the jambs and decorative roundels in the upper corners. Numbers 8, 9, and 10 are broadly similar. Number 11 is three bays wide, with a central entrance featuring a six-panel door set in a plain recess. It has plate glass windows on the ground floor, a platband at first floor level, and eight/eight-pane sashes above, with the central windows being blind. Number 12 is also three bays wide, with some right-hand windows being blind, and a ground-floor marginal glazed sash window. The first floor has an eight/eight-pane sash to the left and a six/six pane to the centre, with plain sashes above. A wrought iron railing runs along the right side of the ground floor. This house has a three-bay garden front to its right. The rear elevation is not visible.
Internal inspection has been limited to number 8, conducted by Bath Council in 1982, which revealed an original fireplace with reeded decoration and a lozenge motif, and a wedge-shaped staircase. Number 9 has a similar fireplace and staircase. Number 12 contains a cantilevered stone staircase with an iron balustrade and a mahogany handrail.
