Description
Somerton House is a villa built in the 18th century, with additions made in the mid-19th century. The house features painted 20th-century stucco on the exterior, a rubble-fronted basement, and has moulded stacks at the gable ends, with the roof not visible. It has a double depth plan and stands two storeys tall with a lower ground floor. The front is symmetrical with three windows and includes a low coped parapet and a coved cornice. The six-over-six pane sash windows have moulded architraves, and the stone doorcase is flanked by Doric pilasters that support an entablature and pediment. The entrance features a six flush-panelled door, with a lead downpipe located to the right. At the rear, there is a parapet, cornice, and frieze, five windows, and a 19th-century two-storey cast iron verandah with a 20th-century canopy. The house is depicted on Harcourt Masters's 1793 plan, indicating it may have earlier origins based on its materials and the low proportions of the front.
