Description

Nos. 8 and 9 Devonshire Buildings are a pair of terrace houses built around 1800 to 1804, with 19th-century alterations and 20th-century additions. They are possibly designed by Charles Harcourt Masters. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with concrete tile roofs and have a double depth range, with a late 20th-century rear extension. The main entrance is on the south side, while the principal elevation and garden face north.

The exterior features three storeys, with two windows on each house, primarily plain sash windows. The windows are paired in the center, with margin panes in the single outer bays. The ground floor of No. 8 has a pair of doors on the far left and a single door with a slab hood on brackets, accompanied by sidelights. There is a first-floor band, lintel, frieze, cornice, blocking course, and parapet, along with a small center stack. The rear is made of reconstituted stone and has concrete tile roofs, featuring two and three-light casements. No. 9 includes an end pavilion with a hipped roof and a door facing west.

The interiors have not been inspected. Notable features include a pair of gate piers with urns at No. 8, linked by railings on a low ashlar wall to similar piers at No. 9, which has only one remaining urn and a plank gate. The return at the party division has railings instead of a wall. This pair is part of a long speculative row of houses, retaining much original detail on the north front and being more fully reconstructed than most of the other houses in the row.
