Description

Nos. 12A and 13 Devonshire Buildings are two terrace houses built around 1800 to 1804, with alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. They are possibly designed by Charles Harcourt Masters. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar, with No. 12A painted, and feature slate roofs.

The buildings have a double depth plan and are entered from the south side, with the main elevation and garden facing north. They stand three storeys high, each with two windows. No. 12A has glazing bar sash windows, including a tripartite eight:twelve:eight sash on the second floor above Venetian windows, and paired twelve-pane sashes at the ground floor. To the right, there is a slightly set back two-storey wing with glazing bar Venetian windows on each floor.

No. 13 has similar upper floors but lacks glazing bars. Its ground floor features a mid-19th century hipped canted bay with a plain sash, and to the left, a three-storey bay with plain single sashes above a part-glazed door with a plain fanlight set in pilasters, complete with a raised band and keystone. The central two bays have outer channelled pilaster strips, along with a ground floor platband, lintel, shallow frieze, cornice, blocking course, and parapet across the front. Large square stacks are centered on the hipped roof. The rear is constructed of coursed rubble with a double Roman tile hipped roof and various sash windows. No. 12A features a two-storey addition with two doors, while No. 13 has a 20th-century door with a hood and a three-storey addition with paired sashes at the ground floor, which also have glazing bars.

The interiors have not been inspected. Each house is complemented by a pair of plain square ashlar gate piers with moulded cappings, and No. 13 has a single urn on top. These are linked by low boundary walls made of coursed work with plain copings, and there are return walls at the party boundaries. The houses are part of a long speculative row, showcasing many variations but retaining significant original details, particularly on the north fronts of No. 12A.
