Description

Numbers 1 to 14, including sections of railings along the front, were built between 1814 and 1824 by Ambrose Cartright. They are a row of three-storey houses with basements and front gardens. Each house originally had two windows. The facades are stuccoed and feature a cornice and parapet. Many houses have wooden balconies with canopies on the first floor, supported by four slender columns. Numbers 6, 12, and 13 retain their original trellised wooden porches, which fill the space between the right-hand columns. The original doorways have fluted frames and narrow rectangular fanlights.

Several houses have been altered. Numbers 3, 5, and 9 have later iron balconies replacing the original wooden ones. Number 4 has a second-floor bay and an extra storey added, while Number 5 lacks a storey. Number 8 has a later bay added on the ground and first floors, along with a porch. Number 14 is bow-fronted with an iron hooded balcony, Doric pilasters above, arcading to the second-floor windows, an attic storey with dormer windows behind the parapet, and a porch with Doric columns. Despite these alterations, Number 14 retains its original form.

Most of the houses have cast iron railings along the pavement and to the sides of the front garden and basement areas. The finials are generally javelin-shaped, although some are smaller. Railing details vary: Number 1 has light railings to the east only, with a fluted terminal post; Number 4 has heavy railings to the front and west; Number 5 has anthemion-decorated railings to the steps; Numbers 5 and 8 have heavy railings to the front; Number 8 also has railings to the right; Numbers 9 and 10 have light railings to the front and west with fluted posts; Number 12 has heavy railings to the east and west with fluted angle and entrance posts; and Number 14 has heavy railings to the front, east (with a gap), and west, with four piers having elliptical caps. Numbers 1 to 14 form a group with the surrounding buildings.
