Description
The Woolpack Public House, originally a farmhouse, dates back to 1621 and has been extended in the 18th century with a later 18th-century parallel wing and large 20th-century extensions that are not of special interest. The front range is cement rendered, while the side and rear are constructed of red brick. It features a hipped tiled roof with an off-center brick stack, an end chimneystack, and another brick stack on the rear wing. The building is two storeys high with three windows, which are 20th-century casements. There is a gabled porch with a 20th-century half-glazed door and an additional 20th-century double door to the left. The right side of the building has triangular buttresses, and the rear range includes one 20th-century casement window, with a cambered design on the ground floor; the rest of this front is now concealed by the 20th-century extensions. A low brick forecourt wall is attached to the front.
Inside, the right-hand front room features a chamfered spine beam with lambs tongue stops and similar floor joists, along with an open fireplace that has a wooden bressumer showing rush light marks and a mark where a crane was attached. The front wall retains a shutter groove from an original window. On the opposite side of the open fireplace, the frame appears to be 18th-century, and the rear range contains an 18th-century parlour fireplace. This building was formerly known as Westend Farmhouse and was conveyed under the name Floods Hatch in 1621.
