Description
Hammonds Place is a timber-framed house, dating to 1566, and considered to be the best building in Burgess Hill. The east front is faced with red brick and features long and short stone quoins. Casement windows are present with stone mullions and dripstones. A gabled projection houses a porch on the ground floor, with a room above, and features a stone doorway with pilasters and entablature. The original door consists of 16 panels. The roof is covered with Horsham slabs, partly replaced with tiles. The north front reveals the timber frame with painted brick infilling. A gable is located at the east end, featuring ornamental curved timbers. Casement windows, some with original diamond panes, are also present. The east front is dated 1566. The house has two storeys and an attic, and is arranged with five windows and two dormers. A modern bay window has been added to the ground floor. The south front has been altered and extended.
