Description

Grove Farm is a house, originally a farmhouse, dating back to the 16th century or possibly earlier, with extensions built around 1800. The original two-bay section is timber-framed and mostly clad in weatherboarding above a sandstone plinth. The later eastern bay has a ground floor of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, incorporating grey headers, and a tiled first floor. The roof is half-hipped and tiled, featuring a central brick chimneystack.

The exterior has an irregular arrangement of 19th and 20th-century casement windows, some with leaded lights. The north front has an 18th-century plank door hung on pintle hinges, and the west side features a gabled porch.

Inside, the timber frame is exposed, including curved tension braces on the first floor. The roof, which could not be fully inspected, is likely to be a queen-post type. The ground floor includes an open fireplace with a wooden bressumer, and two spice alcoves, which may have replaced an earlier smoke bay. There is a late 18th-century winder staircase. The first floor has old floorboards, and a central room incorporates a plank cupboard to the side of the chimneystack and a fireplace, now fitted with a 19th-century cast-iron firegrate.
