Description

Newhouse Farm is a model dairy farm built around 1900 for the Paddockhurst Estate, owned by R Whiteman of Worth Abbey. Sir Aston Webb, who extended Worth Abbey in 1897, may have been involved in the construction of this building, which likely served as the home farm for the estate. The farm is arranged in a quadrangular layout, primarily constructed of snecked rubble, with the north and east fronts made of brick in Sussex bond, though these are not easily visible from the farmhouse. The roof is mainly tiled, featuring terracotta ridge tiles.

The south front, or main elevation, has a prominent central tall gable adorned with bargeboards and arched braces. To the left, there are four cartsheds, one of which has a kingpost roof and another with double doors. To the right, there are two additional cartsheds and an office with fixed casements. The west side includes an unloading door above a cartshed, seven stables with pivoting casements, and remnants of a water pump by Musgrove and Co Ltd Belfast. The east side has more stabling with four doors and three windows, two of which are blocked.

A two-storey section at the end has a slate roof. The north side features a hipped and half-hipped gable and a lean-to, all with pivoting casements. Inside, there is a central stone passage with wide openings and upper openings for ventilation, supported by a roof with through purlins and collar braces. On either side of the passage are covered yards for cattle, which have distinctive roofs with nailed braces and a criss-cross design at the top, reminiscent of a Belfast truss roof. The buildings at each end also feature kingpost roofs.
