Description

The following building shall be added to the list;

ARDINGLY PADDOCKHURST LANE TQ 33 SW 6/10011 Newhouse Farm II GV

Model dairy farm. C1900 for the Paddockhurst Estate whose owner was R Whiteman of Worth Abbey. Sir Aston Webb extended Worth Abbey in 1897 and may have built this building which was probably the home farm of the Paddockhurst estate. Quadrangular building , mainly of snecked rubble but north and east fronts not so visible from the farmhouse of brick in Sussex bond. Mainly tiled roof with terracotta ridge tiles. South or main front has central tall gable with bargeboards and arched braces. To the left are 4 cartsheds, one with kingpost roof, one with double doors. To the right are 2 more and an office with fixed casements. West side has unloading door above cartshed, 7 stables with pivoting casements and the remains of a water pump by Musgrove and Co Ltd Belfast. East side has further stabling with 4 doors and 3 windows 2 of which are blocked. Two storey portion to end with slate roof. North side has a hipped and half-hipped gable and lean-to all with pivoting casements. Interior has central stone passage with wide openings and upper openings for ventilation and roof with through purlin and collar brace. On each side arejcovered yards for cattle with extraordinary roofs of nailed braces with curved brace and criss-cross design at the top, reminiscent of a Belfast truss roof. Buildings at each end have kingpost roofs.
