Description
Wykehurst Park is a large mansion built in the 1870s, designed by E.M. Barry for Henry Huth, an Austrian banker. It is constructed in the style of a French chateau. The house is two storeys with an attic, built of ashlar and with a tiled roof.
The entrance front is asymmetrical, with a central porch flanked by single windows on the ground floor and three windows above. To either side of this portion are round towers, each with an arcaded top storey and conical roof. A polygonal bay lights the staircase, and a square three-storey tower rises higher than the rest of the front. The garden front is symmetrical and considered more impressive. It features eight windows, an eaves bracket cornice, and a central projection with three round-headed arches on the ground floor and three windows above, flanked by circular bastions. A large dormer window sits above, and at each end of the front are large curved bays with seven windows across the ground and first floors, topped with three dormers projecting from the roof.
Originally, the hall was decorated with Spanish leather. The dining room is panelled in an Elizabethan style, whilst the drawing room has an Adam-style marble chimney piece and previously featured walls panelled in brocade. The staircase is of Elizabethan design. The stables, dated 1869, are part of the wider estate.
