Description
Hammer Pond Guest House, originally known as Hammer Pond Cottages, is a Grade II listed building located on the edge of two large hammer ponds in Lower Beeding. This structure was originally a forge or forges associated with the iron industry, which was prominent in Sussex before the widespread use of coal as fuel.
The building is a half H-shaped timber-framed structure that dates back to the 17th century or earlier. The front of the center section features red brick on the ground floor and weather-boarding above. It has two storeys and three windows. The north-west wing has exposed timbering at the north end with brick infilling, while the inner wall is entirely brick and colour-washed. This wing has one storey and an attic, with dormer windows in the hip end of the roof. The south-east wing is likely a later addition and is primarily brick, except for the first floor on the south side, and has a gable at the north-east end. It is two storeys tall with one window. The entire building is topped with a Horsham slab roof and features casement windows. There are three doorways, each with sloping hoods made of Horsham slabs.
