Description
Forest Hospital, formerly known as Horsham Public Assistance Institution, was built in 1838. The building forms a complete quadrangle, with the main north front featuring a central block and two wings connected by single-storey structures. It is constructed of painted brick, with the ground floor finished in stucco and rustication, and has a slate roof.
The central block is two storeys high and has six windows, with a projecting section that includes two windows under a pediment. Below this, there is an oculus flanked by round-headed windows. A large carriage arch rises through a stringcourse into the first floor. Each wing is also two storeys tall and contains two windows. The single-storey buildings feature three large round-headed windows that rise through a stringcourse. The entire front has a modillion eaves cornice, and the first-floor windows are segmental-headed. All windows are sash with intact glazing bars.
