Description

Old Clayton is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier. It features a timber-framed structure that was refronted and extended in the 19th century, with 20th-century windows. The front of the building has a rendered ground floor and is tile hung above, topped with a hipped roof covered in Horsham stone slabs at the front and tiles at the rear. The house has two storeys and three windows, with 20th-century casements and a gabled porch made from old bricks. There is a plinth at the base of the building.

The side elevation is constructed of coursed stone rubble with ironstone galleting, and it has brick dressings and an ironstone plinth. There are three cemented chimney stacks and four 20th-century casements in original openings, including three cambered openings on the ground floor. A metal sign featuring the letter "F" for Falconers is displayed on the front wall.

Inside, the front ground floor room contains an 18th-century six fielded panelled door with an L-hinge, a corner fireplace, and two 19th-century china cupboards with serpentine shelves. The hall showcases exposed box framing, and the central room has an open brick fireplace with a wooden bressummer, a spine beam, and chamfered floor joists with lambs tongue steps, likely dating from the early 17th century. Other parts of the interior were not seen.

Originally, the property was known as Falconers, named after the family that owned the farm in the 15th century.
