Description
The Parish Church of St George is a Grade I listed building located in West Grinstead Village. It features a chancel and nave that are not divided, a south chapel which now serves as the vestry, a central tower, a south aisle, and a west porch. Most of the church dates from the 13th century, although it includes some work from the 12th century. The south chapel, also known as the Burrell Memorial chapel, is from the 15th century. The church has a timber-framed porch and a broached shingled spire atop the tower. Inside, there are 18th century or earlier pews that have the names of local farms painted on them. The church also contains notable memorials to the Burrell family, created by sculptors such as Rysbrack, Nathaniel Smith, and Flaxman. It is recognized as a significant medieval building.
