Description

Cakeham Manor, located in West Wittering, has a complex history dating back to the 13th century when the Bishops of Chichester maintained a residence on the site. By 1363, the original house had deteriorated, but a single bay of its 13th-century hall and undercroft remains. The house was rebuilt in the 16th century. The most prominent survival from this period is a tall hexagonal red brick tower, accompanied by a taller stair turret, constructed by Bishop Sherborn around 1519. Attached to the south of the tower is a contemporary bay featuring trefoil-headed windows with dripstones. A main farmhouse stands further south, comprising two parallel ranges. The west range is constructed of red brick and dates to the 18th century. The east range, forming the entrance front, was built in the early 19th century. It is two storeys high with three windows, rendered in stucco, and has a slate roof with intact glazing bars. A round-headed doorway, incorporating a semi-circular fanlight and a six-panelled door, provides access.
