Description
The Keen monument is a chest tomb located approximately 9 metres south of the south transept of the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Godalming. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of ashlar in a Neo-Classical style. The tomb features a roll-moulded base stone set on a podium. At each corner, free-standing Tuscan columns on deep plinths support an entablature with a panelled frieze that breaks forward over the columns, as well as a lid with a triple-roll-moulded edge.
The sides of the monument include incised panels between the columns, with two panels on each longer side and one on each shorter side, bearing commemorative inscriptions. The lid is inscribed to William Keen, who died in 1816, and his wife Elizabeth, who died in 1873. One side of the tomb commemorates Caroline, their fourth daughter, who died in 1826, while the other panels are illegible.
